Why: Announcement of amicus brief filing and delegation of Springfield faith leaders and Haitian community leaders traveling to Washington.

SUMMARY: The Miot et al. v. Trump et al. case, which seeks to uphold Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, has now reached the U.S. Supreme Court. A ruling on the Trump Administration’s request to stay a lower court ruling blocking the elimination of TPS is expected this week.

ABLE has filed an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief with the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of Springfield Neighbors United (SNU) in Lesly Miot v. Trump, a pivotal case challenging the government's termination of the TPS designation for Haiti. SNU opposes the government's request to lift a lower court ruling that paused the termination of TPS for Haiti. The brief describes the Haitian community's positive economic, cultural, and social impact on Springfield, and the harm Haitians and native Springfield residents will suffer if TPS is terminated without proper court review. Such a ruling would dramatically change the lives of documented immigrants, force the separation of countless Haitian children from their parents, and devastate Springfield’s economy.

Speakers at Monday’s Springfield event include:

Renee Murphy, Managing Attorney at ABLE

Brandon Peterson, Associate Pastor, Greater Grace Temple

Tim Voltz, Elder Champion City Church

Mike Young, Pastor of Zion Hill Baptist, President of Springfield’s Interdenominational Fellowship,

Viles Dorsainvil, Executive Director of the Haitian Support Center

Casey Rollins, Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul
